He is named after the potter whose signature is found on a large hydria of the Meidias Painters decoration (BM E 224), excavated from an Etruscan tomb. Eduard Gerhard first identified this inscription in 1839, and it was he who determined the scene on the vase was the rape of the daughters of Leukippos where previously it was thought to be the race of Hippomenes and Atalanta. The Meidias Painters work bears a close similarity to his older contemporaries the Kodros Painter, the Eretria Painter and Aison; these last two have both been suggested for his teacher. Robert Carver was one of the leading landscape painters in the second half of eighteenth century Ireland. Like his contemporary Thomas Roberts, Carver was born into a Waterford family. His first lessons were provided by his father Richard, also a landscape painter. Later he would train under Robert West at the Dublin Society Schools and would establish himself as an esteemed Dublin scenery painter. In 1754, Carver succeeded John Lewis as scenery painter at Smock Alley Theatre, where he painted a wide array of scenery. He would later be employed by the revived rival theatre in Crow Street where he painted for Spranger Barry among others. ”Zum Fest der heiligen Caecilia” by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel: A performing edition. $49.99 Zum Fest der heiligen Cacilia by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel is a lyrical, early Romantic ode to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. It was composed in two days time in order to be performed for the festival of St. Cecilia on November 22, 1833. The performance, which took place at the Mendelssohn estate in Berlin, featured a choir made up of members of the Berlinersingakademie with Fanny’s friend, Pauline Decker, as soprano soloist. The text was taken from the mass for St. Cecilia’s day. Hensel’s inspiration for the work was Raphael’s painting, The Ecstasy of St. Cecilia with Sts. Paul, John the Evangelist, Augustine, and Mary Magdalene. Fanny’s husband, the painter Wilhelm Hensel, and his students created a stage set patterned after the painting, including an organ replica. The soprano soloist was dressed as St. Cecilia in the painting and three young girls dressed as the angels carried music scores. Composer Fanny Hensel accompanied and conducted from the piano.;This study is to make the work available to a variety of choral groups. Its difficulty level would make it accessible to a college or advanced high school choir, as well as a church or community group with intermediate or better musical skills. Using reproductions of Raphael’s painting as a resource, a multimedia performance, such as Fanny described, is possible; the subject matter (the patron saint of music) lends itself to a program in praise of music or the arts in general. A transcription of the original manuscript is in Appendix A and a performing edition with a new realization of the missing piano accompaniment to the soprano solo is included as Appendix B. |
